Because deep down, we are all

Guardians of the Reef

It is the worst of times, but also the best, because we still have a chance

That’s why, deep down, we are all

Guardians of the Reef

Become a guardian

With your support, you’ll be contributing to the restoration of the reefs in the Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park—and become a REEF GUARDIAN. Our Guardians will be the first to hear about the project's progress and meet our 'baby corals'.

Coral reefs

They are the marine ecosystems with the highest biodiversity on the planet. In addition to their extraordinary beauty, they offer numerous benefits to humans, such as food, spaces for leisure, recreation, and tourism. They are a source of potential medicines and protect the coasts from natural disasters, among others.

Unfortunately, studies report that 60% of the reefs are under some degree of threat. Specifically, 19% have been destroyed, 15% are in critical condition, and 20% are at risk of disappearing.

The problem we face

Aumento de la temperatura

RISING TEMPERATURE

Acidificación de los océanos

OCEAN ACIDIFICATION

Sobrepesca

OVERFISHING

Aumento de nutrientes y sedimentos

INCREASE IN NUTRIENTS AND SEDIMENTS

Fortunately, there are initiatives aimed at mitigating this impact and achieving the recovery of these valuable marine ecosystems.

ESTUDIO

We are all guardians.

A group comprising ECOMARES, Parque Nacional Natural Corales del Rosario y San Bernardo, Universidad del Magdalena, Oceanario Islas del Rosario, Diving Planet, Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, and SECORE International is carrying out a coral reef restoration project based on coral larvae breeding. Here, we explain why and how you can be a part of this initiative, because Deep down, we are all guardians of the reef

With your help, we can achieve our goal of increasing the number of 'baby corals' in the reefs of the PNN Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo, aiming to restore some coral species.

Coral larval breeding

Taking advantage of coral sexual reproduction, the eggs are fertilised with sperm, resulting in a large number of larvae raised in pools that protect them from predators.

This methodology is more decisive in the recovery of the ecosystem as it increases genetic diversity and the survival of the 'baby corals'.

Through the use of this innovative 'larvae pool' method, we scale the breeding of 'baby corals' in situ.

This is our initiative
