The Guardians of the SEA are entering a new phase in Nuquí with the support of GIZ–IKI.

Ecomares is launching a new project to strengthen the work of the Sea Guardians of the Gulf of Tribugá, a community-led initiative based in Nuquí that works on the removal of ghost fishing gear and the protection of marine reefs in the northern Colombian Pacific.

Since 2023, the Sea Guardians have removed lost, abandoned, or discarded fishing gear from the reefs of the Gulf of Tribugá, contributing to the conservation of key ecosystems—known locally as riscales—and to the wellbeing of more than 7,000 people who depend on artisanal fisheries and tourism.

With the support of the International Climate Initiative (IKI), through GIZ, this new project aims to consolidate the organisation of the Sea Guardians, strengthen their management and leadership capacities, and promote gender equity through the launch of a training call targeted at women from the municipality of Nuquí. The objective is to ensure the long-term sustainability of a local initiative with high environmental and social impact.
